One of the recipients of the eXcellence in Ophthalmology Vision Award (XOVA) 2023 is the Centre Tertaire des Soins Oculaires de l’Enfant (CTSOE) in Burundi, Africa. The CTSOE is a partner of Clinique de l’Oeil (CdO). CTSOE is a non-governmental organization that provides free eye care services to children from low-income families. The CTSOE project aims to reduce childhood blindness by improving access to community ophthalmology and raising awareness about eye health. The project will train local health workers, screen children for eye diseases, and refer them to specialized care if needed. The project is expected to benefit more than 100,000 children over three years.

Our CEO and Founder Named by IAPB as “Eye Health Hero”

Dr Levi Kandeke has been named a 2016 Eye Health Hero by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). SEVA CANADA nominated Dr Kandeke for his enormous contribution to eye care in Burundi in contributing to create a network of 24 Vision Centers in Burundi and provides consistent high-quality care to approximately 720 patients per day or 207,360 patients per year where, prior to Dr. Kandeke, eye care was available only to the very wealthy. The Eye Health Heroes programme is an initiative of the IAPB in partnership with L’Occitane Foundation designed to celebrate eye care practitioners and front line staff whose everyday efforts behind the scenes are making a real difference towards Universal Eye Health.
