Lena recovered sight, mother recovered hope

“Lena can now dream of a normal and happy life like her twin sister”.

Lena is a 1 year  8 months old toddler who lives in Nyakabiga a popular suburb in the center of Bujumbura.  A twin sister, Lena struggled with her right eye vision problems since birth. She could not fully open her eye. At 4 months, her aunt saw a white cloud in her right eye and showed it to her parents. They suspected she had cataract. Though Lena’s mother saw she had eye problems and was struggling to see, she did not rush to bring her to the hospital because of lack of financial means.

In August 2020, Lena’s mother managed to get a little money and brought her to the eye clinic for consultation. The ophthalmologist diagnosed her with congenital cataract. Lena was immediately referred to CTSOE, where she received sight-restoring surgery free of charge last August.  Two months later, Lena has recovered her vision and can open her eye. Her mother is overjoyed. She can’t believe her daughter’s sight was restored.
