Eyes Opened, Life Restored: Agathe’s Triumph Over Blindness
Agathe started losing her vision slowly in February 2025. Things got worse in April, just after Easter. Before long, she couldn’t do anything on her own. She couldn’t work in the fields, walk around by herself, or even recognize the faces of people close to her. She had to rely completely on her family for help.
Agathe was suffering from bilateral cataracts. Unfortunately, her family could not afford the surgery, which is often very expensive.
Then one day, her son came home with good news. During mass, he had heard an announcement about free cataract screenings at the Vision Center in Gatabo, and the treatment would be free for those who needed surgery. Agathe saw this as a chance she couldn’t miss.
She went for the screening, where the diagnosis of bilateral cataracts was confirmed. Shortly after, she was referred to Clinique de l’Oeil, in Bujumbura, for surgery.
The operation was a success. When Agathe regained her sight, the emotion was overwhelming. She couldn’t believe she could see again, return to the fields, go back to church, and do things on her own again.
Today, Agathe is filled with joy. To her, it feels like a true miracle. She is truly thankful to the entire medical team who helped her reclaim her dignity and freedom.
